5 Foods to Boost Brain Function

As we get older our bodies will inevitably slow down – but there is no reason your mind has to slow as well. The trick to stopping your mind from slowing down is to start fighting decay at a young age. There are mental exercises you can do to keep yourself sharp, but the easiest way to strengthen your brain is just to eat the right things.

There are certain “brain foods” that should be a staple of any diet.  If you want to keep your mental acuity sharp, consider adding these foods to your diet.

1. Blueberries

Always overshadowed by their more popular berry brethren, blueberries have been proven to improve short term memory and help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. They protect the brain from oxidative stress, so you can count on them to help ward off dementia. You can add blueberries to your breakfast, freeze them and add to smoothies, or eat plain as a nice snack to help power your brain.

2. Fish

Growing up, we all surely heard our mother’s pleas around dinner time, “Finish your fish, its brain food!” Well, mom was completely right. Fish is one of the best things you can eat to improve brain function. Many types of fish contain essential fatty acids that cannot be produced by the body, so they must be obtained through your diet – most easily, through fish. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in abundance in oily fish such as salmon, herring, trout, and sardines, among others. The fatty acids help facilitate the transmitting of signals between brain cells.

3. Nuts

Nuts are a great source of vitamin E, which is useful for fighting cognitive decline, especially as you age. It doesn’t matter how they are prepared or what kind of nuts they are – snacking on nuts daily will help you get the vitamin E you need. Seeds such as sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, and even sesame seeds are also a great source of vitamin E and could help improve brain function.

4. Leafy greens

Adding leafy greens to your diet is already proven to have significant health benefits. But most don’t realize that leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables can help brain function as well. Cabbage, kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and other veggies are loaded with antioxidants and vitamin C, which helps protect the brain. The antioxidants help prevent damage from free radicals, which could be very harmful to your brain.

5. Dark chocolate

We need a dessert after all this brain food, and luckily dark chocolate is a delicious dessert perfect to top off any meal. Dark chocolate contains many antioxidants that are good for the brain and also a bit of caffeine which could help improve your focus on a short term basis. Of course, chocolate also has some unhealthy properties as well so it is best to enjoy this snack in moderation.

The one thing that we don’t want to lose is our sharp mind. By simply adding some foods to our diets, we can protect against brain decay and keep out mind in shape as we age.
